CAFE AND DAILY 5
In our classroom we will use the Daily 5 (created by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser) structure during our language arts block. This structure helps students develop independence in the areas of reading and writing. Students will work independently, in small group and/or one on one with me during the rounds of Daily 5. Along with Daily 5 we will use the CAFE system. CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. This system puts an emphasis on students setting goals and working independently and with me to reach their goals. We will work together in whole class settings or in one-on-one conferences. WORD WORK
During this Daily 5 Round students will be using words for Words Their Way. We do not have the normal list of spelling words. Students will be tested on the spelling patterns of their word sort. Since these are individualized, they are just what the student needs. Our hope is to teach students not to memorize certain words, but to apply the knowledge of their pattern to new words. That is why it is very important to practice the sorts many times during the week and to be word detectives and find the patterns as books are being read! We use the Spelling City App on the iPad for practice and assessment.
